Tea Zaanti’s Five Best Matcha Recipes

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from processed green tea leaves. Its taste is unique– vegetal, grassy, and slightly sharp. For those of you who are new to matcha, the flavor of the cup may taste of a stronger green tea with a whisper of smooth sweetness. At the shop, we are lovers of matcha! It has become a versatile ingredient in the kitchen, inspiring different sweet drinks and yummy treats. I am excited to share with you some of our favorite matcha recipes we have tried out, together and independently.

Checkout the tab Shop Teas and/or pop in the shop to explore the varieties of matcha we carry. We sell a few different kinds of matcha, including those that are unsweetened (Original Matcha and Ceremonial Matcha) and those that are presweetened (Vanilla Matcha, Raspberry Matcha, Blueberry Matcha, Nutty Matcha, Sweet matcha).

Hot Matcha Latte

A classic way to enjoy your matcha!

One of our most popular menu items at Tea Zaanti is our Matcha Latte. A creamy matcha latte with any of our matcha powders makes for a comforting, velvety drink that’s perfect for an early morning or afternoon. Pop in the shop for matcha accessories to help make this process easier. We sell a few different matcha sets and frothers that will help create your matcha latte.

This recipe makes for one drink.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 tsp of unsweetened matcha (the Original Matcha, Ceremonial Matcha, or powdered Genmaicha) or 1 tbsp of presweetened matcha (Raspberry Matcha, Blueberry Matcha, Vanilla Matcha, or Sweet Matcha)

  2. 2-3 oz of hot water (we use 195 degree water at the shop, this is the temperature we recommend for brewing all green teas)

  3. 8 oz of milk (or non-dairy alternative)

  4. Any additional sweetener (syrups of your choice, sugar, honey, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Sift Matcha into bowl to remove any clumps

  2. Add hot water and whisk in a zig-zag motion until frothy

    1. Alternative for steps 1 & 2: Purchase one of our frothers in the shop (we use these in house)! If using one of our frothers, add hot water and powdered matcha to the frother and froth it in there.

  3. Heat and froth your milk separately

  4. Add prepared matcha to cup or mug of your choice (I recommend using your coziest mug, for peak comfort)

  5. Pour milk over the prepared matcha and add sweetener to taste

For an iced version of this drink I’d recommend using cold water (instead of hot water) in step 2, then pouring over ice with the milk of your choice and adding preferred sweetener from there. You can also add the cold water, matcha, milk, and sweetener to a blender for a quicker version of an iced matcha.

Matcha Pancakes

A fun twist to add to your weekend brunch plans!

Although this item is not a part of our regular menu, it is another one of our favorites. I love to enjoy my Matcha Pancakes topped with a little whipped cream and fresh fruit for a delightful breakfast.

  3. ¾ cup of milk (or non-dairy alternative)

  4. 1 egg

  5. 1 tsp of vanilla extract for extra sweetness (If you have a sweet-tooth and/or if you chose to use unsweetened matcha)

Instructions

  1. Whisk pancake mix and powdered matcha together in a bowl

  2. Add your milk, egg, and vanilla extract; stir until smooth

  3. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and pour the batter in to form pancakes

Matcha Cream Cheese

Another delicious breakfast favorite!

Haven't you heard? We are now selling bagels on the weekend! Thanks to our friends over at the Bagel Project, we are offering up some pretty delicious bagel sandwiches and combinations at the shop. This spread is rich and tangy with subtle notes of sweetness, pairing perfectly with a plain or everything bagel, topped with fresh lox, red onion, capers, and dill.

This recipe makes for 8 (ish) servings of cream cheese.

  5. Now that you have created your ice cream base, add in your powdered matcha and mix/whisk until the mixture is completely green
