Throughout recorded history, mint has been recognized and used as a healing herb – there has even been some found in 3000-year-old Egyptian tombs. An early Greek myth tells how Hades took a liking to a beautiful woman named Minthe. In a fit of jealous rage, Persephone (queen of the underworld and wife of Hades) turned the young woman into mint. The mint family, Labiatae, is a group of over 3000 plants grown worldwide, with many known for their aromatic, volatile oils and pungent flavor. Both peppermint and spearmint have long been used to calm the digestive system, soothe heartburn and stomach ache as well as alleviate nausea and motion sickness. Mint is also helpful in relieving headaches and nasal congestion – and it’s a great breath freshener. Our peppermint and spearmint are both premium, second-cut (mid/end August) and come from the northwestern US, where the moist, cool air provides the ideal growing environment for high levels of volatile oils – the aroma will take your breath away!
