With a history in tea reaching back to the 1850’s, Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon), boasts the world’s largest tea auction center in the capital city of Colombo. There are six main growing regions on the island, ranging from 1500 to 8000 feet in elevation, and teas from the different areas have characteristic flavors and aromas. What is Orange Pekoe? For starters, it has nothing to do with flavor, but everything to do with leaf size. “Pekoe” is derived from the Chinese word pekho or baihao and refers to the tiny silver hairs on certain tea leaves. “Orange” supposedly comes from the royal house of Holland – the first European country to import and re-export tea. Orange Pekoe was thus connected with the highest quality tea.
Steeping Instructions: Pour 6 oz. heated water (208-212˚F) over 1 teaspoon tea leaves and steep 3-5 minutes. Remove leaves and enjoy. Re-steep as desired.
